Lightning round - 1 short night in Rome

Hi all! My wife, another couple and I will be in Italy next September 5th & 6th nights in Venice, 7th & 8th nights in Lake Como 2, 9th & 10th nights in Cinque Terre, and 11th & 12th nights in Tuscany. We had planned 3 nights in Tuscany but our plane leaves at 9am on September 13th. So, we decided to go to Rome in the late afternoon of Sept. 12th to spend the night so we would be fresh and not rushed the next morning to go catch our flight home. My question is: Where would you stay for the night in Rome if you had to catch a flight at 9 am the next morning. We've been to Rome before and done all the must-sees and must-dos, so missing touristy stuff won't be an issue. But a great meal, some great wine, and a good time in town on our last night in Italy would be marvellous. That said, being close to the airport seems the logical thing to do. Can you guys offer some help with this quandary? Where would you stay? I'll take general location and/or specific hotels/flats. The place is basically for sleep and showers! Any advice will be appreciated.

We're doing something similar next year, and have opted to spend that one night in Fiumicino. There is a wide range of hotels, and evidently some good restaurants, as well. We opted for a very inexpensive hotel, but it's supposed to be in easy walking distance of good restaurants and the beach.

Try googling Fiumicino hotels, or check Trip Advisor.

Well, there is always the Hilton Hotel that has a connecting walkway to the airport. It’s pricy because of location and it’s a Hilton. For something very different, and it might not be what you want for a final blow-out dinner in Italy, but I stayed overnight at the Hotel Tiber in the small fishing town of Fumiciano which is a 10 min taxi ride from the airport. Pleasant modern hotel with a decent restaurant specializing in seafood. Nice rooms with sea or river/town views; cost was about €100 in early fall.

Or you could look for a good restaurant in Rome, maybe with a nice view, close enough to Termini that after dinner you could pour yourselves onto the Leonardo Express and then stay at the FCO Hilton the night before flying. The Hilton is very convenient (and correspondingly expensive). Its restaurant isn't very atmospheric and as I recall the menu wasn't very interesting.

Given that I'd have to be at the airport by 6 am for an international flight, I'd stay near the airport. I'd probably do a nice evening cafe or early dinner, then stroll around the restaurant area for a while, and then return to the airport-adjacent hotel for a sleep until morning.

Contrarian view: We had an early flight this summer. We were originally going to stay near FCO but because of feedback on this forum we chose to stay within the walls. Great idea! We stayed at the Hotel San Carlo https://www.hotelsancarloroma.com/ near the Spanish Steps. We were there early enough for lunch at Nino https://www.ristorantenino.it/home-english/ and IL Gabrielo for dinner http://www.ilgabriello.com/en/ both very good. We finished dinner at about 11, had a nightcap, crashed for a few hours (having packed before dinner) and had Welcome Pickups fetch us at zero dark thirty for a traffic free ride to FCO. We slept well on the plane. A great night in Rome and we are doing it again this summer. Changing it up a bit we are staying at the Smerelda https://www.smeraldoroma.com/en/ and having dinner either at Rosciolli or Armando. I’d rather end my vacation as if it was never ending and catch up on sleep on the plane I mean c’mon, you’re in Rome! The hell with the logical thing to do. Ciao!

If you plan to arrive in Rome late afternoon, I agree it's best to stay in Rome, enjoy you're last evening there and arrange an early taxi or shuttle to the airport. You don't say where you plan to be in Tuscany, but for instance from Florence you could have an early dinner and then catch either the 8:13pm or 8:43pm (last) train to FCO, stay at the Hilton and have an easy walk to the terminal in the morning.

I like Frank's plan.

We drove back from Tuscany on Saturday and checked into the FCO Hilton. We then took the free shuttle into Rome and spent a wonderful evening having dinner and wandering around. We took the last (10:30) shuttle back to the Hilton and had a stress free morning before our flight home. I use Hilton for business so we got a free upgrade to the executive floor.

Thanks everybody! Those are some excellent suggestions. We are soooo looking forward to this trip.

Now, as long as it doesn't rain a lot (these recent news reports about Venice's record flooding have me a bit concerned), we should have a ball.

Grazie ancora, Ciao!

September isn't usually a rainy month in Italy, so you should be fine.

The trip to Italy that had us ending in Rome and an early flight to the US, we stayed here-- http://www.hotelrivierafiumicino.com/en/hotel-services/beach.aspx

We had dinner at Chalet del Mare, a 15 minute walk away. It is across the street from the beach and has a large outdoor seating area.

Good dinner, sunset at the beach and an easy stroll back to hotel. Found it a pleasant way to end our trip. Modest fee for shuttle service to airport.
