Hi;We are going to be in Rome on Apr. 25th,2010 & would like to know what will be closed that day.
Diane,
I've had a terrible time finding out information about this day. Some websites I look at say Rome will be crowded, lots of things closed, transportation reduced, etc. And other websites say not much goes on anymore. We will also be in Rome, but had thought about leaving that day for the CT (it will be the end of our week in Rome). If there is a parade or other celebrations it would be fun to stay in Rome for that day. If I find out anything outside of this forum, I'd be happy to let you know. I may e-mail RoninRome directly because he always has good advice. Best of luck!!!
Diane,
I found some information on www.tripadvisor.com if you search their website for Liberation Day or April 25. That might help.
Diane,
Here's what I heard from Ron in Rome:
"April 25, Liberation Day, is a national holiday in Italy marked by ceremonies, historic re-enactments, and celebrations. Many towns hold fairs, concerts, food festivals, or special events. In Rome, the President will lay a wreath of the tomb of the unknown soldier, followed by a march, from Porta S. Paolo at midday and then head towards Campidoglio. From there, it proceeds to Piazza Vittorio Emanuele.
So some roads are shut down and bus routes disrupted during this period. The buses are on festival schedule (although I think in 2010 it falls on a Sunday anyway). Many businesses are closed – although “most” of the most visited tourist sites will be open.
There are ceremonies at a the American cemeteries in Italy. The Sicily-Rome cemetery is in Nettuno, south of Rome, and the Florence American Cemetery is just south of Florence. "
Hope that helps!
Again,Cindy thanks so much. You have been very helpful.Hopfully we all will have a good time in Rome.
Take care.
