Liberation Day in Milan

Just yesterday I booked our flight to Milan, arriving Monday, April 25th. We are just staying in Milan for one night before continuing on to Florence on Tuesday. My question is whether it was a mistake to be in Milan on this holiday, which is also a Monday. I guess the museums are all closed anyway. Is the Duomo Museo open by chance? What else can you suggest we do that day? Are shops all open? I assume restaurants are all open, right? We are staying right near the Centrale Station, taking the fast train from Malpensa to the station, then walking to the hotel. Any help would be appreciated, as we'd hate to waste a day in Milan doing nothing.

You should be fine, take the Metro to the Duomo stop and walk around a bit - the Duomo and other churches will be open; Sant'Ambrogio is a good choice to visit as well. You can take the elevator or stairs to the top of the Duomo for great views and close-up gargoyles. Or you can go to the top floor of Rinascente department store, have a very expensive drink, and have views of the Duomo upper level exteriors. The Galleria next to the Duomo will be open.

Go to the Castello Sforzesco and walk around the grounds (the Castello itself may be closed on Mondays); the flowers should be in bloom.

Restaurants should be open as usual. State museums and others, including the Duomo Museum, will be closed on Mondays. There is a restaurant near Milano Centrale on via Settembrini, the restaurant's name is (something) Settembrini, it's very good.
