We will be in Sorrento from April 23-28, of which April 25th is Liberation Day. What should we expect as far as closures, so we aren't surprised and can plan daily excursions accordingly? During our stay in Sorrento, we will do day trips to Pompeii, Capri, Positano/Amalfi Coast, and Paestum. Any advice on what to avoid and/or schedule for April 25th?
traffic is higher than normal and make sure you have a hotel reservation before you arrive - it's a big holiday and hotels may be sold out very quickly.
We were in Sorrento during the holiday period a couple of years ago. As said it will be very busy and everything of interest to you will be open. I would probably avoid Capri from the 25 because the large ferries over from Naples bring hundreds if not thousands of daytrippers. In addition to Italian visitors from other parts of Italy staying over in Sorrento, and if the weather is good, there will also be lots of daytrippers from Naples and the towns around the Bay. The incoming traffic on the coast road was jammed for a couple of hours! When we were there the main street, Corso Italia, was closed to traffic right down to the station during the day and there was a concert in Piazza Tasso in the evening. And of course the obligatory fireworks in the evening. You will also get a good view of the displays all around the Bay. Have fun.
Thanks for the replies. Already have hotel reservation with a balcony and view -love fireworks! We'll arrive in Sorento on the 23rd, so we'll go to Capri the 24th. Not driving and are planning on the Monetti's to take us on the drive to Positano/Almalfi.
