Liberation Day and May Day in Italy

I'm heading to Italy for work at the end of April. It is my good fortune to be able to add a three day weekend to both ends of this work week.

However, I just discovered that both of my tour weeks are holiday weekend in Italy.

Sunday, April 25, is Liberation Day. I will be in Bologna
Sunday, May 1, is May Day (Labor Day). I will be in Rome.

What can I expect on these days? Will museums, shops, restaurants and sites be open? Local transportation operating?

If I can't do the typical siteseeing, are there holiday events I could be attending? Concerts, entertainment, parades, etc.
