Levanto as an alternative to cinque terra?

Since CT is expensive and crowded (second half of september), some folks have suggested Levanto as a nearby alternative. Does anyone recommend this or if so, what hotel would you suggest?

This is Rick's opinion: "Graced with a long, sandy beach, Levanto is packed in summer. The rest of the year, it's just a small, sleepy town, with less colorful charm and fewer tourists than the CT. it makes a decent homebase if you can't snare a room in the CT." You can read more about Levanto in his book, including his half-dozen picks for sleeping.

Later part of September should not be too crowded in the CT. I have been ther several times in September and have always found rooms. Sometimes just showing up and getting a room in a private home. Levanto is very nice and could be used as a home base but I would use CT as your home with a side trip to Levanto.

We couldn't get a room in late September in the CT....(we tried in June early July)...settled on Santa Margerita Ligure and Sestri Levante...ended up loving our hotel, the water and the town in SML and really enjoying SL. Day tripped into CT and found it to be overrun with tourists...(I was able to book my younger son into Vernazza in the middle of September and he had a wonderful time). Check out the Metropole Hotel in SML as an alternative to the CT...walking distance to Portofino.
