My wife has difficulty negotiating stairs and climbs...it's a medical thing. We have been To Cinque Terre and Venice and she has done all right, mainly because we use public transportation and shuttle buses whenever possible. I have seen pictures of the Amalfi Coast and it looks beautiful....but steeply hilly. Many hotels and B & Bs advertise as "steps" from the main road or beach....is this an area that someone with a mild handicap can enjoy? Anyone insights would be appreciated.
The towns are very hilly, I'm afraid. Amalfi has a reasonably flat central town but Positano is straight up and down.
Stay in Sorrento, which is relatively flat, and day trip to the Amalfi coast towns by bus or boat. It's also easy to get from Sorrento to Capri or Pompeii. If going to Positano by bus, get off at the 2nd stop. You can then walk to where a taxi from the 1st stop would drop you off without encountering any stairs. No avoiding stairs from there. The boat will drop you off at the beach level in Positano, but you would need to walk up some stairs to explore more than the waterfront area of town.
If it is climbing that is a problem, follow Frank's suggestion, stay in Sorrento which is flat and walkable and take the bus to Positano. Steps are downhill into the town. Then take the ferry to Amalfi as you won't have to climb uphill to the bus. From Amalfi, take taxi or walk to bus stop and take bus back to Sorrento.
Nice one day trip.
Thanks for you suggestions....climbing is the problem, especially stairs. She is not too good at walking uphill either. She would be fine going down to a boat....but going up would be tough.
I just recently returned from there and I too am disabled with very limited walking. My son rented a car and we drove the coast and enjoyed it thoroughly. There were many pull-offs to stop and take in the breathtaking view as long as you liked. (The road is extremely narrow though and it does get crazy at times) The entire coast is extremely steep therefor I did not even try to do any of the walking. There are hotels there with very steep narrow steps to them so we did not stay there. We did stay in Sorento. Trust me, doing a driving tour is just as amazing! Best of luck!
