We will be staying in Lesa (Lake Maggiore) in early June. Will have a car and about 8 days there. Any ideas on local history or towns to visit?
I would definitely visit Stresa and take a boat to the Borromean Islands. Plan on a whole day for this trip. Stesa is a lovely town in itself. http://www.stresa.com/borromeanislands
Jeff,
I would also suggest spending a day in Stresa. I'm not sure what the parking situation is, as I've only visited there via train.
In addition to Stresa, another option you could consider is a trip on the scenic Cento Valli railway to Locarno (CH), returning via boat to Stresa in the early evening. You would first have to travel by train to Domodossola to connect with the Cento Valli. It's a very pleasant trip, and there are a few interesting sights in Locarno (it's a very scenic city). If you decide to take that trip, I can provide some sightseeing suggestions.
Excellent choice of location. I stayed at Milano Speranza hotel on lakefront. They have parking arrangements with another hotel down the street.
In addition to what Ken suggested, add the village of Cannobio (on the way to Locarno) and Orta San Giulio, on lake Orta, just 20 minutes from Stresa by car.
8 days is a long time for any of the lakes. You could fit another lake (Como?) or the Langhe/Monferrato wine country for maybe 3 nights if you are willing to split your stay into 2 locales.
I am another Stresa fan and immediately fell in love with the place when we visited . I keep dreaming about returning when we go back to Italy . Take a look at Cannobio on Google street view and you will instantly understand why Roberto suggests it . Walking along the lakefront promenade is one of the great joys of Stresa , enjoy it !
