Hi, we are heading to lericci, gulf of poets, for 4 days the end of August. I understand there are boat rides to Cinque Terra. Is it a good idea to see the coast by boat, perhaps hike for 1/2 day between cities (which and how many do you suggest) and return in the evening by boat?
Since Lerici is not served by train, boat will be the most scenic and convenient transport. See boat schedules - there are a few morning departures and a few afternoon returns. There has been quite a bit of recent hiking advice in this forum, which you could find through Search. Note that the path from Riomaggiore to Manarola and the next section to Corniglia both are closed; see also http://savevernazza.com/traveladvisortrailupdates/ and check again locally when you buy a park pass.
The boat is a great choice to see Portovenere and the Cinque Terre coast. You can also enjoy Tellaro by bus or hiking from Lerici. It has much of the charm of a Cinque Terre village without the crowds. Similarly, the beautiful village of Montemarcello is nearby and one of the Borghi Piu Belli d'Italia. There are descriptions in English on the internet.
Lerici is also on the edge of the Montemarcello Park which has very nice hikes through the Ligurian landscape. Look at this hike: http://www.apathtolunch.com/2012/06/forgotten-villages-of-gulf-of-poets.html
Thanks to both of you, can't wait to explore!
