Leonardo Express train or private Car?

Hello All!

A group of 8 of us will be taking an early morning train from Florence to Rome Termini on our way to Fiumicino Airport for our 10am flight to Paris.

We will be crunched for time ( not part of our original plan), we arrive in Rome Termini at 0749. I see the first Express train leaves Termini at 0805 for the 30 minute commute to the airport. My question is this: I see the train stops at Terminal 3 but our flight leaves Terminal 1.....would it be better to hire a car/taxi for a direct drop off at Terminal 1 or would we be ok taking the Express to Terminal 3 and walking the 5-10 minutes to get to the terminal and get to our departure gate on time? We've never flown out of Fiumicino and don't know what to expect for a Saturday morning flight, particularly with a tight schedule. We'll probably have to each check one bag.

Thanks,
Scott

The airport train station exit leas up a ramp that takes you to a long walkway (with some moving walkways) and eventually takes you right into the departure terminal. The whole walk takes about 10-15 minutes.

Contact Stefano's Rome Cabs or look into suntransfers.com. For the price of that many train tickets you may be able to get a private shuttle directly to your hotel. Keep in mind that the train ticket from FCO isn't the only cost, you will also need a taxi or metro from Termini Station to your hotel. Both of the services I mentioned offer large vans that will hold your crew. When I go solo, or as a couple, we take the Leonardo Express. When we go as a family group, we always get a private shuttle.

To be honest, my suggestion is to book a flight from Florence direct to Paris instead.

Becky and Jack......Thanks for the info. I'll be looking into Stefano's and Suntransfers. Badger......That originally was our plan but the flights were almost double/triple for what we are paying to fly out of Rome.

Seems to me like you are cutting it awfully close especially if you have to check bags

Are you willing to accept the cost of new air tickets for 8 if you miss your flight?

I’d stay in Rome the night before flight
It’s no extra night cost, you’re dropping night in Florence

For how ugly early you will have to get up, have you considered going to Rome the evening before?

Your best case scenario ( via rail) is having 83 minutes from arrival at FCO to get to the airline desk in the terminal to check your bags, then clear security and get to the gate.

Not sure a taxi from Termini to FCO would be faster, by the time you get from the train to the taxi, get it loaded and then drive., and unload at the airport drop off area.

When does the airline close boarding? Some airlines close the door 20-30 minutes before scheduled departure, so you may have less time than seems apparent.

I wish you good luck, but it is not what I would plan.

If you are flying from Fiumicino at 10am you should sleep in Rome. Basically, you are betting the price of 8 tickets that everything will be working in time. It often does but not always.

If you are flying on ITA from Rome to Paris, you could have a look if you can add a Florence/Rome leg. The ITA early flight is a feeder to all flights from Rome and if it gets delayed the airline will have to relocate you on a following flight. If you go by train and the train gets delayed, the airline could not care less.

Agree with previous posters..tight squeeze..but..if you all want to stay in Florence for that extra day..why not consider an evening train to FCO..and stay at the Hilton..and then no worries the next morning! Just a thought...I too am one that likes to squeeze every mi ute out of a city!

Badger......That originally was our plan but the flights were almost
double/triple for what we are paying to fly out of Rome.

And how much are you paying for train/taxi? And how much is your time worth? Also, did you consider flights from Pisa or Bologna? Much better options than Rome in my opinion.

What is the extra flight cost to fly out of Florence?
Is that extra cost much more than the train ticket from Florence to Rome Fiumicino?
For a 10am flight to Paris you should be at the airport at least 90 min prior to departure and I'm not sure that can be safely done. What if there is a train delay?
I would fly out of Florence or out of Pisa, which has several low cost flights to Paris.
If that is not feasible, I'd be spending the last night in Rome, maybe even at the airport hotel.

Another thing to consider at Termini is the potentially long walk from your train from Florence to thr Leonardo Express. You might look at getting off the Frecce at the Tiburtina station and taking the FL1 to the airport. But still cutting it very close.

Note that 4 rooms at the Rome Airport Hilton could run $800 or more, assuming four couples.

The distance from the FCO train station to the ITA check-in desk should be the least of your worries.

The plan is flawed at a very basic level. Could you at least change to a later flight to Paris from FCO?

hey hey bruinpi
this is a no brainer to me. i'd be spending night before at FCO (rome airport) for your 10am morning flight. when is the flight taking place?
this crunching of time adds more stress and gray hair, not knowing this airport and the where of gates/terminals/airport counters for checking bags. it's a big airport with so many coming and going from all over USA and europe.
curious what the cost of fare (2 to 3 X) from florence, cost of train and private shuttle to FCO. as others have stated look at other airports, find a hotel in rome, taxi/shuttle to airport.
so many if's, train delayed, waiting/walking at train station, finding shuttle van (make sure large enough for all 8 of you and your luggage). with some of the "hiccups/miscalculations" that have happened on my travels, i sucked it up, paid for the difference and let it go. good luck and enjoy your vacation

If you do have that early flight out of Rome, even though I love the suggestions of flying out of a more convenient airport, I totally recommend the airport Hilton.

We did that for an early flight and it was so great just to wake up and walk the 10 minutes from our room to the airport check-in.
