Leonardo Express Train at Fiumicino

Hello,

We are visiting Rome for a week and then will take an Alitalia flight to France from Rome.

How early should we get to the airport for a domestic flight leaving Sunday morning at 9:45? We will be taking the Leonardo Express train to the airport from Termini Station, so I'm trying to time things correctly.

Also, I'm kind of confused about what to do once we exit the train at the airport. From what I read, our flight to France will probably leave from Terminal 1. Do we just get off the train and head over to Terminal 1? Will there be Alitalia counters to check in once we get there? Do we check in at an Alitalia counter before/after we go through security?

Thanks in advance for helping out an ol' worry-wart! :-)

Charity,

I always try to allow a bit of a "cushion" with flights, so would suggest leaving Termini no later than about 07:15. As your flight is within Europe, that should allow enough time. I'd suggest buying your ticket for the Leonardo Express the day prior to travel, so there are no delays on the day of travel. DO NOT forget to validate your ticket prior to boarding the train on the day of travel, or you'll risk hefty fines!

You can easily walk from the airport rail station right into Terminal 1. You may find it helpful to have a look at the excellent Ron In Rome website.....

At least one hour prior to departure. The station is across the road from the terminal. From the station you walk to the terminal using the aerial walkway. Just follow the signs. The check in area and the counters are the first thing you see as you enter the terminal, just like any airport. Security is after the check in, like it is in other airports.

7:15 is good if you worry about possible lines, but as I recall the train leaves Termini at about 7:05 and 7:35, takes about 30-35 minutes to get to the airport. Departure times can change for the summer, but there is one train departing every half hour.
