Leggings

Are leggings (solid color black-no stripe, etc.) too casual for street wear in Italy? In churches?

They are fine as long as you, ahem, cover your backside and they don’t look like stockings and you forgot your dress. In other words, they need to look more like pants and wear a tunic-length top.

No, they are perfectly acceptable. I only wore leggings during a 23-day tour in Italy in May (RS and independent). I wore tunics and shirts long enough to cover my backside. The advantage of leggings is that they pack very small. Three pair + something else fit into a small packing cube. They also handwash and dry overnight if the temperature is warm enough. Colder rooms took 1 1/2 days but if I could have squished more water out and hung them outside, they would have dried faster. FYI if it matters, I'm 69, wear a size 8 and often wear leggings at home but I'd be very happy if I hadn't already broken my annual New Year's Resolution to lose 10 pounds. I like Spanx brand because they help hold the jiggle in, just wish they were a little longer past the ankle instead of to the ankle.

Yep, leggings are perfectly fine as long as your tops modestly cover your derriere. You just don't want to look like you're on your way to the gym, make sense? :O)
