Hi We are planning a 2 night stay in the lake Como region. Which is a better place to stay ? Varenna or Lecco ?
While i have not been to Lecco , my vote goes to Varenna. It is beautiful, convenient and a must see, imo.
I agree with JS, beautiful Varenna is conveniently located on the midlake and one can easily visit other nearby villages (Menaggio, Bellagio, Tremezzo, etc.) via ferry.
If you'll be returning to Milan, after your visit to the lake, make sure to buy round trip train tickets as the tiny train hub in Varenna is not staffed.
Have a wonderful trip!
I agree on Varenna. It is a beautiful little town with easy ferry access all around the lake. Also, the tourist office at the train station sells tickets. Check for hours they are open.
Mid-lake is best for scenery and the triangle ferry routes. So Varenna or any of the other towns on the ferry schedule.
We stayed in Varenna for 2 nights in May and absolutely loved it. The Mid lake area is very beautiful and you have a choice of beautiful villas to visit in the region. The mid lake ferry and a day pass for the same makes travelling in between towns very convenient and not expensive at all.
Have a great trip!!
Agreed. Varenna is the better choice.
Lecco is definitely NOT the prettiest town on the lake. Or at least I didn’t care for it when I stayed there many years ago.
Varenna, Bellagio, Menaggio, or any other place in the midlake area will be better.
I dropped a rental car off in Lecco and saw a bit of the town. I've stayed in Varenna twice. I would definitely choose Varenna.
