Lecce with our without Otranto, Gallipoli

Hi, We will be traveling in Puglia soon. On our last day we will visit Lecce. Would you recommend we spend the entire day in Lecce, or would you spend a few hours in Otranto or Gallipoli (since we cannot visit them on another day?) If so, which would you recommend, Gallipoli or Otranto? I assume we wouldn't have time for both as we will be starting our day from our Fasano hotel and driving up to Brindisi that evening.
Thank you.

I would vote for Otranto in a heartbeat, mostly for cathedral. It's not the biggest or most beautiful cathedral by a long shot, but it is historically significant. The Siege of Otranto gave other parts of Italy time to prepare for an Ottoman invasion in the 15th century and most likely prevented the Ottomans from conquering Naples and Rome. Italy would be a very different place now if weren't for the men who defended the city, and whose bones are now encased behind the altar of the cathedral. Also, the Tree of Life mosaic, which is a mashup of biblical scenes, greek mythology, and King Arthur -- basically everything they knew about the world in the 12th century --- was fascinating. Otranto was one of those places that unexpectedly changed my understanding of history. I am very glad that I visited.

Lecce is lovely, with a great vibe and some interesting sights. The sculpture in the cathedral is all made of paper mache -- definitely worth seeing -- and the archaeological museum is worth a visit, especially if you like Greek vases.

I would split the day between Lecce and Otranto if you are pushed for time.

I haven't been to Gallipoli.

I also vote for Otranto but not Gallipoli. If you can do both Lecce and Otranto (I mean: if you have a car and keep the travel time short), two or three hours in Otranto could be well spent. The cathedral is very suggestive, but also the old city around the port is nice and completely different from Lecce (and probably most cities on your itinerary).

I would slow down and enjoy just Lecce. It's has unique attractions that deserve attention and it's enjoyable as a city. We were there for two entire days and were sorry to leave. Find a place that serves tiella such as Trattoria Le Zie.

Be aware that this far south, they take their afternoon siestas very seriously. You will likely not be able to find a crumb of food to eat between 2 and 8 pm. Plan accordingly.
