Lecce to Sorrento

I will be travelling from Lecce to Sorrento on mass transportation (train or bus, both options available) It is a full day of travelling. Has anyone done this? Is worth it to piecemeal your travel to pop into some city/village for a short lay over for a look around? If so, what places would you recommend for a meal, a visit, a rest. Thanks in advance.

we did this last year, just went for it all in one shot to get the travel over with. We changed trains in Caserta. I've seen other posts by people who've stayed in Caserta and had favorable opinions of the town; you can perhaps find them using the not-so-great search function above on this site

The Royal Palace at Caserta is humongous and apparently quite grand; I haven't been there myself, but I think I've seen comparisons to Versailles. The Campania ArteCard covers entry to Caserta, which I mention in case you're going to be in Sorrento long enough to take advantage of that card, which also covers all the important excavations in the area (Pompeii, Herculaneum, Paestum, Oplontis and more) as well as many sights in Naples (including the archaeological museum).

and the walk from the palace to the back of the gardens is like TWO MILES.....that you can see the WHOLE WAY.....we kept saying "surely we are getting closer!" and it took FOREVER.....its an impressive place!

But with just another 3 hours more to get to Sorrento, I might just push through and get there....
