Have seen a few posts about Puglia and glad that the feedback is very positive! We head there next mth and are so excited! Any suggestions for how to have the max wine/foodie experience? The region is known for great olive oil, food and wines and we plan to partake in all...if anyone knows of great reasonably priced restaurants/osterias or trattoria as well as "musts" to order, that would be great! Also, we want to do some olive oil tastings but are hoping to just go to an olive oil bar or something, not have to pay for tours..any suggestions on that one? Thanks,
Lisa
Yep, the Grotto P is especially awesome, and romantic, at night. We found the food to be OK, but the experience was something that we will alwasy remember. I think that it is one of Fred Plotkin's favorites. Another place we absolultey loved was farther North; up the coast to Giovanazo. We ate outside at a small restaurant called the Punto e a Capo. OMG! Probably the best, if not one of the best meals, we have ever had in Italy...and it was not expensive. Our hotel recomended it. We ended up ordering some sort of 5 or 6 course meal that was mostly different types of fish, etc.
Did you read the NY Times restaurant critics post about restaurants in the area? http://travel.nytimes.com/2007/05/06/travel/06Puglia.html?pagewanted=1&ei=5124&en=7fc0ee4c82bf1ba5&ex=1336276800&partner=permalink&exprod=permalink In Lecce you must go to Cucina Casareccia; it was awesome! Are you going to have a car? Drive to Pogliano a Mare and go to the Ristorante Grotta Palazzese. The dining experience (eating in a cave while the ocean washes thru it) makes up for the food and the prices. Post the same question on Trip Advisor, and read the reviews of restaurants that people have visited. We liked some of restaurant pics in the Lonely Planet guidebook.
wow the photos of that grotto restaurant are spectacular http://www.grottapalazzese.it/it/home/
