Lecce or Otrano?

My husband and I are traveling to Puglia region in mid September (10-14) and are debating whether we stay in Lecce or Otrano?

We plan to visit various beaches each day and will have a car, but out of our home base, we want a decent night life with restaurants, bars, etc. open. Not sure if it being September impacts anything not being open in Otrano?

It would be nice to have a beach nearby, so I can see the appeal of Otrano, but really not sure which to choose. Anyone have experience?

Lecce is not far from either coast, so I’d peruse some accommodations and see if that sparks anything. I’ve been to Lecce twice but not Otranto, so I clearly had a preference, but I think either would be fine in September.

@Valedelphia - do you mind me asking how you landed on Lecce? You mentioned you had a preference, but trying to understand what made you come to that decision. Maybe it will help me! TIA for your help.

Oh it’s just gorgeous! And with many good restaurants. We visited in May, when you can sometimes get rain and evenings are cool, so we wanted to be somewhere with indoor attractions just in case. Both times we stayed three nights at Roof Barocco Suites (which also played a part in our return), driving to each coast one day. We keep the car parked at night and walk.
I would like to get to Otranto one day though. We intended to see the cathedral at least but missed the open time and never made it back.

I've been to both and say both places have their pluses and minuses. By September, the crowds should be thinning out.

But I would choose Lecce. It's a better central location with more choices of restaurants and bars.

I would also suggest a trip to the other coast and Gallipoli. It had the clearest sea water I have ever seen.
