We are staying 2 nights in Varenna and the next night in Bolzano. Can you tell me how travelers do this by train? Are there buses that go between these two cities?
Has anyone taken a taxi?

It's about 180 miles between the two towns, about 12 miles farther than Seattle to Portland. I think that answers the taxi question, especially since you'd have to pay for him to drive back to Varenna, assuming you could find someone. Google maps is an excellent resource to learn about distances in Italy. Happy travels.

You'll take the train from Varenna, through Milan, through Verona, to Bolzano. There's so many options, but likely you'll change in at least one, probably two places. I would imagine there's bussing options, but that sounds like pure torture to me. You should call the hotel you're staying at in Varenna and ask them what they suggest. They may know of a car service.
