Leaving on October 16 for 2 weeks - what is the weather like?

We are leaving for Italy on October 16 through November 2, and I am having a hard time trying to figure out what to pack. We will be traveling through Venice, Florence, Cinque Terra, Siena, Assisi, Umbria, Rome, and Salerno. What is the weather like? Any packing suggestions? I appreciate your thoughts!

This is the best summary version of long term weather data, scroll down and look for locations near you: http://tours.ricksteves.com/tours09/weather.cfmwww.weather.com is a place you can go starting 10 days from your departure, look for the 10 day forecast. That site also has Averages, look for the Averages button, averages by month similar to what Rick has (first link) but more locations on weather.com.Bottom line: You're still 15 days out and forecasts won't start being reliable until about 10 days out. Bottom line: None of us really knows what the weather will be like for your dates, the above is the best we can do.

It's pretty cool right now, especially at night. Think layers. And check weather.com before you leave.

Tami, I visited Rome last year, Oct 31-Nov 1. It was cooler during the day in Rome. I wore a weight fleece jacket and layered with a rain coat for warmth.

Wore a nice pair of nylon Prana pants (only took one pair for the week)

The day time temps in Rome were around 65-70. It was ideal for sightseeing.

You will be further north, so expect some cooler temps in Venice, Florence and in the CT.

Take layers, all lightweight. Look for Merino wool tops like Smartwool that will keep you warm without weight - taking up less space in your suitcase. Merino wool does not have the "itch factor"

I didn't take sandals, wore my Puma low profile shoes the entire time (with an orthotic in them for support and comfort) I brought a compact umbrella, but didn't have to use it (Gap has cute ones)

If you take fabrics that will dry quickly you can get by with less. For tops I took several stylish t-shirt tops. Wore one for several days, then put it in the bottom of the backpack.

Just remember, you really need less than you think, in a pinch, you can purchase a t-shirt or sweatshirt if you need a clean top, or more warmth.

For your trip I'd pack: 2 pants, 5-8 tops (t-shirt type) 4-7 panties, 2 bras, 5-7 pair socks, one tennis style shoe, one pair sandals, 1-2 sweaters (wear one on the plane ride over), sleep wear, rain jacket, fleece jacket, then your personal care items, but go light on cosmetics, no one will be able to tell in your photos if you have eye shadow on! Skip the hair dryer, most hotels have them if you ask.

Plan for nice days, cool nights and some rain. Layer your clothing!

I was in Rome 2 years ago at the same time you are going and the mornings were cool (light jacket) and the afternoons were hot.

Thank you Kent - does anyone research this web site anymore?

Tami, rather than trying to predict the weather why not bring clothes that will work no matter WHAT the weather? This means bring layers. A waterproof shell with pit zips, lightweight sweater or fleece, maybe a set of long underwear, waterproof shoes.

Thank you for your thoughts; I appreciate the advice!

To those who thought that I didn't already look at Rick's weather averages, I did. Unfortunately those averages can be deceptive... I know living in Seattle that one day can be freezing and the next day hot! I appreciate the ideas from those who have been during the fall. If you've been on any of Rick Steves tours, you know how small of a bag you have to pack in. :) I think I'm on the right track, and I welcome any additional suggestions.

Again, thanks!
