Late September we will fly into Milan during mid morning, pick up our hire car and we want to find a small town north west of Milan (heading to Lake Maggiore) and not too far away that we can stay at overnight. Thanks Robyn
Robyn, Where are you staying on Lago Maggiore? You could consider staying in Stresa (on Lago Maggiore) as it's not really that far from Milan. I assume you're aware that EACH driver will require the compulsory International Driver's Permit for driving in Italy (which is used in conjunction with your home D.L.). You'll also need to be VERY careful to avoid the dreaded Zona Traffico Limitato areas, as hefty fines will result (and they've been resorting to collection agencies to collect fines from tourists). If you need more information, post another note. Happy travels!
I'll second Ken's choice of Stresa. It's a charming spot and quite lovely and actually on Lake Maggiore. It is also fairly close to Milan Malpensa airport, if you are flying in there instead of Linate. The car hire area at Malpensa is relatively easy to navigate and the access to the autostrade is good.
Thanks everyone for your replies. We will be flying into Linate airport and are just wanting a small town to have our first stopover and we can plan our trip from there. We have driven in Italy before but would like to know more about the Zona Traffico Limitato areas. We are happy to have as much information as we can. Once again thanks. Robyn
