Hey folks, we will be arriving in Venice by car and I am planning to park in the parking deck next to the causeway. My plan is to take just enough clothing to last the two days we are there, and leave all other luggage in the car. My worry is that I am renting a station wagon and it may not have the roll type screen across the back to hide what's in the back. Is theft a problem in those parking decks or are they pretty secure? Any suggestions?
I would never take a chance if ANYthing was visible.
I don't know that I'd feel comfortable leaving luggage in the car for that long but I took a really thin black travel blanket with me for this purpose & would suggest that you do the same so you can at least cover the luggage & make it a little less visible.
I wonder what's under that blanket? Let's bust the window and see.
With several travel days involving stops in towns and villages of Emilia Romagna and Tuscany, we drove a car much larger than we otherwise would have liked in order to have a secure American style trunk. I would never have risked it with a hatch or wagon and cargo cover.
Very unwise. Even cars with trunks are routinely broken into and anything visible in a wagon is unlikely to still be there on your return. Theives do this for a living and pretty well know which cars are rentals and therefore have a high possibility of something to steal even if not visible.
If you take Rick's advice on packing, your luggage should never be a burden
Rob, Leaving luggage in the car for two days (especially in Italy) is NOT something I'd recommend! In the same situation, I'd pack light and take everything with me. Good luck!
If we have luggage in the car we do not leave it unattended at any time. Even at the rest stops on the autostrada, one of us stays with the car. The routes south of Rome are notorious for thieves targeting rental cars, hidden luggage or not.
Thank you all for the advice. I guess I'll be dragging the luggage with us to our apartment! Oh well, I had to ask. Thanks again!
