We are building an itinerary that includes the islands (Sept-Oct). I'm considering doing that at the end of the trip so we'd return car beforehand. Or, it seems easier and preferable to keep the car for the whole trip to avoid having to plot trips to Milazzo. We wouldn't take the car to the islands--presumably cars can be parked in the ferry terminal. Does anyone know the daily cost? Thanks!

Coastal trains (to Palermo, Messina, etc) run every couple of hours, though those to/from Palermo sometimes require a connection. I think it's at least worth checking public transport connections for the route you would need. But I'd also consider ferry schedules as flexible, based on weather.
