Leaning Tower of Pisa Reservations/Tickets

We have scheduled a limited stop in Pisa at the end of April. I went online to purchase tickets for the the Tower tour but became uneasy when the Visa verification page asked me for detailed information such as the last four digits of my social security card. Does anyone know if this is the normal process to buy tickets online? Or do we really need to purchase them in advance to ensure we get to take the tour? Thanks LaDonna

LaDonna for our trip in July 2009 I purchased tickets to climb the tower before leaving home using the website. At that time it also asked for your passport # and maybe it still does now. We were traveling to Pisa as a daytrip (mid July) from Florence and I wanted a specific time and know it can be very busy in the summer months. I am glad we had a reservation as I am sure we would have had a wait. We also climbed the tower towards the end of June 2002 when it had recently been reopened and arrived without reservations. I think the wait was around 2 hrs. which we spent seeing the Baptistery and Duomo. I am not sure how busy Pisa is in April. Do bring your passport with you. I did not read anywhere where I needed to have this but had a copy and they accepted that. Buon Viaggio!
