Hi all!
My husband and I will be taking a day tour of Tuscany in September, with the final stop in Pisa. When we book the tour, it is optional to purchase tickets to climb the Tower. Just wondering if the experience is worth the 60 additional Euros total or is it just to say that "we did it?"
This site shows tickets for the Tower are 18 euro per person
60Euto??? Oh my gosh that’s highway robbery. Why not just book it yourself on the official www.opapisa.it for 18Euro each? Click on the tickets link and choose your date and time. You don’t need a tour guide to do that.
Yeah that is quite the additional "fee" to book it for us. Thanks for the suggestion. We will decide in August if we want to make the climb and book it directly. Most people on the bus tour would need to make sure that the timing works with the tour, so that we can get back on the bus to Florence, but we are staying in Pisa that night - so no problem. Thanks again!
Well, in this case, add the Baptistry to your plan. If the Tower is really busy, you can climb the Baptistry for an elevated view of the Tower. It has a double dome like St. Peters and I think the guides will still sing a capella so you can here the acoustics. Lovely.
Actually if the people on the bus just want to catch the train back to Florence they could be free to have a leisurely time around the area at their own pace. It takes about an hour from Pisa Centrale to Florence Smn
The only thing that I realized is that the tour allows us to bring our luggage along to Pisa and keeps it on the bus for us while we are sightseeing. We have to pick up our bags from the bus before they leave. If we choose to sightsee after the tour leaves for Florence at 18:50, we won't have a convenient place to store our luggage. I have heard that the TI will store luggage but only until 17:30. Our hotel is located near Pisa Centrale and I don't really want to change it as it will be handy to get on the train in the morning for Cinque Terre. It may be worth it to pay them the extra 12 Euros per ticket not to have to hassle with our luggage.
By the way, what I can glean from the reviews, the bus tour will only be in Pisa from approximately 17:45 to 18:50.
If the bus stops at Pisa Centrale, for others to take the train, then head back there and check your bags either at the left luggage facility or your hotel. Then take the Lam Rosso bus back to the tower unencumbered
Edited spelling
The bus is a private tour bus and will be coming from our previous stop in San Gimignano. Pisa Centrale and our hotel are on the other side of the river. I could chance it and book my own tickets for 18:00 and hope we are on time.
I have just checked the hours for September. The tower opens at 9:00 and closes at 20:00. The last entry is a half hour before. This gives you a very short window to head back to the station, collect and check your bags then a 15 minute bus ride back.
Check for a bag bnb to see if any storage is closer.
There are numerous apps these days for finding alternative businesses to store luggage at. Nannybag is one I remember. Also websites, so why not see what might be available near the Tower?
I believe while you're climbing the 300 steps or so, you can't see outside until you get to the top. We decided to just relax and enjoy the view from below, when we visited last June.
Andy--- Don't scare people off.... there are 'only' 251 steps ( not 300 or so)
For reference, the typical 2 story home has 14 steps between floors, so it just the equivalent of 18 such levels.
Happy travels all
