Le Marche places to see/stay?

We are thinking about getting off the beaten path of Rick recommendations and spending 2-4 nights in Le Marche region. Any recommendations or suggestions?
Our flight into Flornence on April 14, then out of Naples April 28th. The last 5 nights will be spent in Sorento. We plan on renting a car for the off the beaton path small towns in Tuscany, Umbria or LeMarch.

We are going on a bike tour in 3 weeks to Le Marche. Our tour will take us to San Leo, Urbino, Gubbio as the larger towns. We will ride through Assisi (been there already once) and Perugia (also been there) I'm happy to PM you when we get back end of September to report our findings about Le Marche! I'm getting to Le Marche before RS finds it.

Urbino is in Rick's book also - just a short mention. It is a wonderful place. If you decide on Umbria and get as far as Gubbio, you could easily hop on over to Urbino for a visit.

Good for you, Karen! Gubbio and Assisi are actually in Umbria, but definitely worth a visit. Urbino is beautiful, be prepared for steep streets in the historic center. Ancona has a beach. Since you'll have a car, you might be happiest just stopping at any town that looks interesting from a distance. By the way, I don't think Rick will find Le Marche any time soon, apparently he hasn't found Sicily yet.

...oh Rick has discovered Sicily - around 6 years ago we were there on one of his tours. He just hasn't included it in his guidebook - probably because it's too far out of the mainstream for a 14 day visit. We were in Umbria/Le Marche in May/June and although both are stunningly beautiful and full of interesting places to see, with your time restraints I'd stick with Umbria. There's a lot of driving between places in Le M. on roads that are slower than the regular autostrada. We're planning on returning to that area to explore it more thoroughly because it's a very
charming and intriguing area - a little 'out of time'.
