This is the one area we 've missed in Italy. We wonder if anyone has a recommendation for an apt near the Fano area (beaches) in a smaller town and would like to take day trips from there. Or any place you've stayed that was comfortable for 2 adults. Thanks

Hi Theresa, I stayed in Rimini in October 2008 with some relatives, prices seems decent around there, as well as in Riccione. Day trips: 1...San Marino: park the car at the bottom of the hill, and take the thing that looks like a ski lift (dont know the exact word in english...), well worth the view. Get the San Marino stamp in your passeports (5 euros I think) at the post office. 2...Take the E78/SP3 to go to Gubbio (Eugubine tablets) and then push on to Assisi, you will probably have to drive back at night throught the mountains, not advisable if it rains take my word on that !
Or you can get a room in Assisi from the Office of Tourism from Assisi, right there on the spot: we managed to get a room at 55 euros without advanced reservations on the weekend they were celebrating the 800th anniversary of Saint Francis of Assisi conversion, I guess we were lucky. Ciao !
