Le Marche

Anyone been to Le Marche? My wife and I will be spending 3 days and 3 nights there this October - wondering how to prioritize the sightseeing. We will have a car and we will be staying just south of Urbino.

I recommend checking out Le Grotte Frasassi caves, they're beautiful and huge! Also, we visited Gubbio in Umbria but was about 45 minutes from where we were in Fabriano. Try some Verdicchio wine while in Le Marche.

I second the recommendation for the Frasassi caves. While you're in that area, stop off at the little town of Serra San Quirico for a wonderful meal at Le Copertelle. Urbino, itself, is a great town for a day's visit. It just oozes history and art. The Palazzo Ducale, not to be missed. There is street parking available outside the historic center, with shuttle buses to take you in. Be forewarned, however, that the signage is a bit quirky. If you use that option, be sure to have some way to figure out where your car is when it's time to leave. (There's a tale behind that warning!) Though it's not in Le Marche, you could also visit Gubbio. It's pretty close to where you'll be staying.

One of my favorite areas! We just stumbled into it, renting a car and staying in Urbino. My 1st advice it to do what we did -- drive and stop at towns that look interesting.

On the coast, a town we really liked was Pesaro. It has a large pedestrian-only walkway & a nice beach. In fact one of the best meals I've ever had was at a restaurant near the water there.

There is a book called "The Marche" published by the4 Touring Club of Italy (its in English)that I'd recommend you get. Also, the Marche is not quite as discovered by English speaking tourists, so if you don't speak Italian its worth investing a few hours learning a few basics. If you get the Pimsleur Italian I series from your local library and invest 15 hours (I listened to each lesson twice, took 30 hours) you'll know enough Italian to ask simple directions, make purchases, order food and drinks, etc.

Thanks everyone for the great advice. We'll probably dedicate 1 day to Urbino and the area North and East of our Agritourismo and 1 day for the Caves and the area South of the Agritourismo.
