I find laundromats to be common in Paris, don't recall seeing them in Rome or Florence. Does anyone know if they are a common entity in Rome? (Maybe we can pack a little lighter if we can visit a laundromat...)

They're common. They just take a little exploring to find them sometimes. Your hotel can point you in the right direction of course, but if you know where you'll be staying, enter the address on Google Maps and "search nearby" for "lavanderia".
