Staying in Rome next week. My ancestors are from Latina which i know nothing about. I am thinking of taking the train there but i cannot find out any information about how easy it would be to get around without a car there. Does anyone know?
In just looking at a map, it appears there is a taxi service you can book. Have you considered hiring a driver in Rome for the day? I’m not sure how extensively you want to explore the area or the city but that might be the easiest solution.
The train will take you from Roma Termini to Latina in about 40 minutes.
Hello kel.mel,
It looks like you can take the train from Rome (Roma Termini) to Latina direct and it takes 40 minutes or so and will cost you about 4e one way and runs at least a couple times an hour. No need to book train tickets ahead since it is a regionale train.
The wrinkle is that Latina train station is in Latina Scalo and is actually a ways away from Latina city proper which is maybe why you couldn't find a train.
It is about a 15 minutes drive straight down via della Stazione into Latina itself. There is at least one bus that does this route and you might be able to catch it at the train station or may have to walk a little way to the bus stop on via della Statzione to catch it. Google maps has done a good job with local bus routes when I've used it in northern Italy and this should be pretty straightforward.
Or you can grab a cab at the station to make it easier - at an additional cost of course - especially if you have a a specific place in Latina you want to visit. There are taxi stands in the center of town at Piazza del Popolo if you're looking to get back to the station and that is handy otherwise you would probably need to call for one.
Let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have questions. All in all it will probably take about an hour and should be pretty straightforward.
Have a great trip,
