Late night arrival into Venice

I'm trying to book my trip to Italy for Aug/Sept 2013 & I'm using frequent flier miles for the flights. Unfortunately this means that I don't have a great ion of flights & all I can get into Venice (from LAX) is a flight that would arrive at 11pm. I'm estimating that by the time we get our luggage, etc., it would be around midnight or later. How feasible is it to get transportation to our hotel at that time of night? Would I encounter any issues? I had planned to use the Alilaguna boat from the airport however I'm not sure if it runs that late. Does anyone have experience arriving in Venice that late? Thank you in advance for any input you can provide.

And in case you're wondering why you typed a different word and it came out "ion" it's because this bulletin board edits out certain letters in a row including "s e l e c t", so if you type "s e l e c t ion" the normal way, it edits out all but "ion."

Sam, I guess the Alilaguna is probably not a viable option. I suppose it's possible that we could make the last Alilaguna boat but in thinking about it, at that hour, it's probably best to take a private water taxi directly to the hotel landing instead of trying to navigate & find the hotel in the dark. Are water taxis readily available after midnight? It would sure be a shame though to pay all that money for a water taxi & not be able to see much since it will be dark. I'm trying to decide whether to book these flights or wait & cross my fingers that better flights will open up. Sometimes it's such a pain using miles!! Michael, thanks for clearing that up. That's so strange!!

What's wrong with taking a regular taxi? They can drive you right to Piazzale Roma from where you can take a water taxi or maybe even walk if your hotel is close enough. Water taxis from the airport are expensive. Besides the regular taxi maybe faster. At that time you'll be in Piazzale Roma in 15 min. The water taxi is at least half hour.

Roberto, the hotel that I'm planning to stay at is roughly between St. Mark's Square & the Rialto Bridge, therefore I believe it's too far to walk from P. Roma to the hotel, especially with luggage. Would it be less expensive to take a regular taxi to P. Roma & then a water taxi from P. Roma directly to the hotel? Or does that not make sense? Thanks for your suggestions.

Water taxi from VCE to Venezia will be about 120 euro. Reg taxi to p. Roma is about 55 euro. But you aren't close to p. Roma, so auto taxi + water taxi may be the same as water taxi all the way from airport. Search on line using key words: taxi acqueo Venezia aeroporto VCE and check various offers.

Sheron, check with your hotel about transportation at that hour - perhaps they can reserve a water taxi for you. Make sure the hotel knows that you are arriving at Piazzale Roma and not the train station (Santa Lucia) if you take a regular taxi from the airport to Piazzale Roma.

and make sure that your hotel knows to expect you in the middle of the night. If not you may turn up at your hotel to find it locked up tight with you not able to get in...

Thanks for all the advice. I checked with the hotel and the front desk is manned 24 hrs/day. It seems as though it would be easier to take a private water taxi but I'm still thinking it might be best to hold out & see if I can get a flight with a more desirable arrival time into Venice. At least I now know that if push comes to shove & I need to take the flight with the late arrival time, it shouldn't be a problem to get a water taxi to the hotel. Thank you again for all your input.

I think you may be overestimating the time it will take to get your luggage. Marco Polo isn't that big. I think if you land at 11 you'll have your bags and be through customs at 11:30. Anyway you might just opt for a water taxi because he can get back in the tight canals between SM & Rialto. If there is more than one of you, that will cut the per person cost. The blue line alilaguna will take 1.5 hours to get to San Marco. There is an orange line that is quicker, but the last one is at 23:45 so that one is tight.

Thanks for the insight Sam. Good to know that it won't take that long to get my luggage & walk out to the dock area. I'm still hoping to get an earlier flight but not sure whether the frequent flier mileage gods will comply! Thanks again.
