Late night airport arrival in Venice

Our flight lands about 11:30pm at the Venice airport. We've noticed that there are late-night surcharges on transportation into Venice, even with the hotel shuttles. Any ways to avoid those extra charges?

There are buses to Piazzale Roma at 11:40 pm, 12:10 am, 12:40 am, 1:10 am. You should be able to make one of those. It is a 24 minute ride. The "N" boat runs from there down the Grand Canal beginning 12:09 am every half hour, but the ones at 9 past the hour skip the stops between Rialto and San Zaccaria on the way to Lido. The ones at 49 past the hour cover all the stops.

Where is your hotel?

We checked the Marriott by the airport for the first night only, [since it will be at least midnight by the time we are thru passport control] ,but the hotel reported that their shuttle doesnt run after 11:30pm, and that the taxis have a late-night surcharge. Is there UBER? thx

Why are you worried about a late night surcharge for a 1 km taxi ride? How much can it be? 6 EUR instead of the normal 5 EUR?

Arriving this late, I would want to get to an airport hotel ASAP to get to bed and chalk up any extra cost like taxi surcharges as part of the expense of arriving on such a very late flight.

Since the Courtyard by Marriott is only 1km (0.6miles) from the terminal, a one minute drive, your taxi fare will certainly be subject to the minimum charge fee which is 8€ during the day or 11€ at night or on Sunday or holidays.

So basically 11€ is your taxi fare (not sure if they charge 1€ per piece of luggage also).

If you had arrived earlier during the day you would have saved 3€ in taxi fare (8€ instead of 11€)
I don’t know how much the hotel shuttle would have charged you during operating hours.

I’m pretty sure 3€ won’t kill your holiday budget, but if the extra 3€ are too much to swallow (maybe you are originally a Genovese), there is a way to avoid the taxi night surcharge: you can walk the 1 km to the hotel (about 15 min). However I’m not sure if there is even a sidewalk.

Thanks so much for all the very helpful advice. When my Significant Other read "surcharge" he over-reacted, it seems. Glad you all experienced travelers are so knowledgeable!

Last year we arrived Venice 11:30 pm, had a reservation at Courtyard at airport. Taxi driver said he had to charge us $20, we were so tired, we gladly paid and even tipped him. Welcome to Venice.
