Late May or Early September for Florence and Dolomites

Hi all,
Thinking of a trip to Florence and the Dolomites next year that would be roughly 4-5 nights in each. First timer to Italy (other than hiking around Courmayeur). My question is, if I want to be able to see the best of Florence and then head up to the Dolomites (home base in Ortisei or elsewhere) for some day hikes, would I be better off in late May/June or early September?
TIA
Rich

You will have more hiking options and all of the huts and lifts will be open in early September. The Dolomites typically do not fully "open" for hiking until mid-June. That said if late May ends up being better for your schedule, you can still enjoy the region. I have hiked in the Dolomites in late May/early June and was able to still enjoy a variety of sights and trails, but the weather was definitely more moody.

I would say September for the Dolomites, if you want all the lifts around Ortesei and Val Gardena to be open.
