Late arrival time--quickest way lodgings

This is my 1st time to Italy and I will be arriving at Florence airport 17 Sept at approx. 9:10 p.m. I have reservations at Casa Santo Nome di Gesu, address Piazza del Carmine, 21. Their closing time is 11:30 p.m. Will I be able to arrive there before closing if I take the bus, if not what is the quickest way to get there before the 11:30 curfew?

I would assume that the quickest way would be a taxi. However, a 9:10 arrival sounds extremely risky for an 11:30 curfew.

I guess it depends upon whether you have checked luggage, but even if not, if your flight is late by an hour or more, you might not make it there by 11:30.

I think I should plan on that night staying somewhere that has not curfew. Any recommendations for a budget 1 night stay close to Casa Santo Nome di Gesu?

You will discover that Amerigo Vespucci airport is not large. We were out of there with our checked luggage within 30 minutes. No customs either. There are taxis just to the right as you exit. Should be about 20 minutes and 25Euro to get to your hotel. The bus will only take you to the train station. Hope your plane isn't late.

Since this is my first trip to Italy, I think maybe it would be a good idea for me to book that 1st night at another place because I don't want to risk arriving after the curfew and having no place to go.

Gayle: Good decision. You don't want to start your Italian vacation on the street with all your baggage at midnight, jet-lagged and nowhere to sleep. It's happened to travelers before and is no way to start your trip or impress travel companions with your savoir faire. We'll see if we can help you find some alternatives. But, arriving that late, you may have to go with one of the chain hotels or at least one that's fancy enough to be able to hire 24-hour staffed reception. It's not like here: Many/most of the smaller family-run places recommended by Rick don't have 24-hr staffing because they need to get home and sleep, so they literally lock up at a certain time.

I can't tell, from the info I have about Florence hotels, whether they have 24-hr reception, since that's your main requirement. Here's what I'd suggest: go to this website: ViaMichelinselect the tab containing the word Hotels at the top ribbon, then go to the Hotels box on the left, input Florence or Firenze (the Italian spelling), dates, etc--then click Search and it will generate a map with maybe 30 hotels on it, you can click for some limited info on each hotel, what you're looking for, at this point, is one that clearly says we've got 24-hour reception. To determine that, you're going to have to note the name in the Michelin list, then separately google the name to see if you can get the hotel's website, go to the hotel's website and see if you can tell from the website whether it has 24-hr reception. And brace yourself for the prices: this is Florence and you need a place that's large enough to be able to afford to hire staff for 24-hr reception, and you may have to pay for this, if you know what I mean.

Thanks, Kent....since I'm arriving so late and the convent I have reservations with opens at 6:00 a.m., I think I just might try a hostel for those few hrs. This is an adventure for me so it just might be a good chapter in my life story.

As long as the hostel doesn't have a lock-out time, they might, you'll have to query them to be sure. Are you flying in from the US or from a European city?

I'll be flying in from Amsterdam. There is Ostello Santa Monaca, its open until 2 a.m. Now I just need to locate it on the map. Prices are from EU 17,00 to EU 20,00.

Since you probably will make it for your 11:30 curfew (you just can't count on it), and it would be nice if you didn't have to switch places after one night, maybe you can use the inexpensive hostel only as a backup plan.

So, if you are in on time, go to Casa Santo Nome Gesu, but, if not, head to Ostello Santa Monaca?

I need to contact Casa Santo Nome di Gesu at least 7 days before I arrive to confirm. I'll let them know my arrival time, maybe they will have a better suggestion.
