Late arrival into Florence airport

Arriving at Florence airport at 8:30 at night and the next day is Monday, so all major exhibits will be closed. I and am wondering if it is better to stay by the airport or head straight to the hill country... I appreciate the suggestions.

Florence is cool, so I'd stay there for a couple of days, but that's just me. How long will you be in Italy? What else are you planning to see?

Have you checked individual sights for opening/closing days? Firenze is one of several cities that has museums, etc. closed on either Monday or Tuesday.

Not everything is closed on Monday. Uffizi and Accademia yes, but many others are open.

You don't need to stay near the airport even if you arrive late. The airport is only 15 min from the city center, so there is no reason to stay near the airport in some of the ugliest districts of Florence (Novoli or Peretola).

Regarding the possibility of going straight to the hill country (not sure where that would be, since the entire region of Tuscany is hilly, including all around Florence), how do you intend to move around? At that time at night (by the time you deplane and get your luggage it might be 9:30pm) there aren't too many extra urban buses running. You could rent a car at the airport but are you sure you want to venture driving out in the country at night, possibly impaired by the jet lag?

Roberto, we will be headed to Siena from Florence with a rental car. Given that we only have four days in the region, I am wondering if it would be better to come into Florence another day when everything is open or take a bus into Florence and see the sites that are open on Monday and then rent the car. - We are thinking of staying in Orvieto for the last night and dropping off the car and then taking a train the the airport in Rome. Also, any suggestions of where to stay would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

I gather you plan to see Florence, Siena, Orvieto and you only have 4 days. You don't need a car for any of the above locations due to traffic restrictions and ease of public transport.

I hope you're not flying from and back to Denver...

Roberto, after Florence, we will head to Siena as a base to see several of the hill towns. On our last trip we stayed in a fantastic agriturismo in Orvieto and used it as a base for cycling so we will probably not stop there.
