Last Week of August, First Week Of September - Arrive in Venice, Depart from Milan

I've booked it. We're going. 10 years after our delayed honeymoon in Italy (where we went Rome, Florence, 5T, Milan, Venice, Rome, Home), we're going for our delayed 10th anniversary in Italy. Same two year delay, because we're just that way.

On our first trip, we beat feet all over Venice, were too exhausted to stand in long lines, and generally not having that great of a time. On this trip, we plan to see the three triangle sights in Venice, hire a gondola, have a cocktail at Harry's or one of the other St. Marks legends, and check out some of the church art. Oh, and photograph the hell out of the place.

Then, instead of going train from city to city, we're going to rent a car. Then, it's drive to Lake Como or Maggiore, then onto Piemonte. Return car to Milan, fly home, with an overnight in Dublin.

So excited.

Since it is an anniversary trip, start off an evening with a sit down drink at one of the San Marco locations with an orchestra and do a little dancing. Or you could do so after dinner. A little expensive, but it's something everyone should do at least once for a special anniversary.

TC: Fantastic idea.

The decision I'm working on now is driving from Venice or taking a train to Milan, and getting a car there. The cost of renting a Fiat 500 or similar doesn't seem to be much different when picking up in Venice or picking up in Milan and dropping off at Malpensa in Milan. So, it's a question of whether I want to spend time driving from Venice to Como or Maggiore, which looks like it could take us through Padua, Verona, Sirmione, Bescia, and Bergamo, or just Milan to Como or Varese.

The wonder and horror of planning a trip is that, even when you've set arrival and departure, what you do in between is this blank slate with dozens and dozens of options.
