Last visited CinqueTerre in late 70s; should I return or is it too popular?

I visited Cinque Terre twice, both times were over 30 years ago. At the time, there were few non-Italian tourists there.

On an upcoming trip to Italy, I have considered returning to Cinque Terre, but I am not sure how much it has changed. Since my visits were before Rick and others published books stating how wonderful it is, I get the feeling it's now a madhouse.

Would anyone who visited Cinque Terre long ago and again recently give feedback? Thanks!

I can't tell you whether you should return. But here are the facts you asked for: you said in the 1970's (30 years ago, you said) "there were few non-Italian tourists in the CT."

That aspect of the CT has changed, big time, compared to when you last saw it in the 1970's. You'll see all of us (from America and Canada) and also tourists from many European countries other than Italy, all there with you.

You will probably be a bit disappointed. I made my first trip in the early 90s and went again 3 years ago. I could not believe how packed with tourists the place was.

The scenery is still beautiful.

Paul - I've been in Le Cinque Terre each year for the past 10 years - Does it have more tourists - Yes - Is it worth returning to ? ABSODAMNLUTELY!!!!!! Walking the trail is just as incredible as always - particularly the section known as Via Dell'amore from Manarola to Riomaggiore - only about a 1/2 mile walk BUT Amazing!
Nice cafe half way to stop and grab a cold drink and take some photos.
The villages are just as nice as always - there are tourists as there are in all scenic, incredible spots throughout Europe - Certainly not so many that they ruin the experience - think you'd like a return visit.

Ciao, Greg

Paul remember that althought it is crowded many are day trippers and at night it is very nice.Stay in Vernazza and enjoy the evening when the crowds have left.

Partly depends on when you would be there. I was there last year, mid-October and there were few tourists. I only remember seeing one organized tour group. Most of the time I was on the trail (the first 2 parts from Riomaggiore), I was alone almost the whole time, starting out around 9 am.

We just returned and when we got to Monterosso, it was a Sunday in September and it was PACKED with people! But many left that afternoon and then it was quieter, it is amazingly beautiful and we loved it, even with a lot of tourists, it is still charming.

Paul,

In the same circumstances, I'd be tempted to return just to see how the area has changed.

Yes, it's very "touristy" now, but that can be minimized to some extent by choosing what time of year you're there. As someone else mentioned, the trails are still wonderful to hike and the scenery is undoubtedly as beautiful as when you were last there.

One positive aspect of the increased tourism is that there are more "facilities", including good restaurants, very comfortable lodgings, ATM's, etc.

I'd definitely suggest you return there, even if just for a day or two.

Cheers!
