We are celebrating retirement with a trip to Italy end of the summer/early fall and our last two nights will be in Taormina. Any favorites for hotels? Is Hotel Belvedere worth the money or is there something else just as wonderful?
Christine,
Hotel Belvedere looks like a fine place to spend your last two nights in Italy on your retirement trip, provided your budget will allow. I've only stayed at Hotel Continental which is an older hotel but very comfortable and I'd certainly recommend it.
In October 2010, we stayed four nights at the Hotel Villa Schuler. Not only did the patio give spectacular views of the sea, but it was only a short walk--without hills--to the Corso Umberto, the main drag that runs down the middle of Taormina. Great breakfasts made-to-order.
Thanks Ken and Jay! Will check out the Schuler and the Continental. Belvedere seems wonderful, but website is quoting $300/night for mid October. Think that may be what is required in a resort area though.
On a Rick Steves trip a few years ago we stayed at the Victoria Hotel on the main pedestrian street in Taormina - it was perfect.
I see they have a listing on TripAdvisor for further info.
It's not less expensive but San Domenico Palace Hotel is magical !!
I loved my stay at the Casa Cuseni, and would definitely stay there again. My review is here: https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/italy-reviews/taormina-accommodation-casa-cuseni
In May, 2014 we spent a week in Taormina at the Villa Sara. It is located uphill from Corso Umberto. Our room had a balcony overlooking the city and bay. In the morning the view was beautiful and at night it was STUNNING.
The owner is an elderly woman named Elena and she is most gracious. The place is more of a b&b than hotel and the property contains a garage area.
Buon viaggio,
Thank you all. Your suggestions give me some options so I'm going to do a bit more research before booking. Thanks for taking the time to share. This forum is great!
I just stayed at the Hotel Continental on June 8&9, I recommend it highly. Great rooms, helpful&friendly staff, and great views of the sea and Mt Etna from the hotel terrace. It's also just steps from the main pedestrian walkway and restaurants. This was my favorite stop on my RS tour.
