Hi! The one day we have in Milan...I'm realizing that I am months behind when tickets first came available to see the Last Supper. Also, probably one of the most popular days of the year to see it in April :-) Any suggestions how to get tickets for a family of 4 to see the Last Supper? I read a forum post from 2017 about calling to see if there are cancellations? We have booked many other tours for Italy, so really was hoping to skip on buying through a third party tour company. But I realize this may be our only option? Thanks for sharing your experience of how you visited the Last Supper painting.
Hiking Family,
You’re correct, unfortunately the official website cenacolovinciano.vivaticket.it does not show any more tickets for the month of April.
As you know, these tickets are very popular and sell out very quickly!
Your only other option, besides booking a tour (through a third party) is to go to the office of the Last Supper right before they open and ask if there are any tickets available for that day.
When I was there, picking up my ticket, there was a couple who asked for ticket availability and they were able to get tickets for later in the afternoon.
Having said this, it may be difficult to obtain 4 tickets for the same entry time.
Wishing you a wonderful trip!
Edited to add:
Yes, you may also call to ask if any tickets have become available for your date ( due to cancellations). You’ll find the number on the website.
I just found this information on the official website linked above:
Didn’t you find any available tickets for your visit? Check availabilities on the website often, since it is updated every day.
Thank you for your help Priscilla!
I was late in organizing this for myself in a few weeks and was resigned to pay quadruple via a tour operator. Then I saw that tickets do pop up on the official sales page a few weeks out. But that might not work for you—the times were quite scattered, and I don't think I ever saw more than two available together—mostly just singles.
The time I saw the Last Supper (Il Cenacolo) was years ago, just after they’d started limiting visitors and timing the visits with the dehumidifier ante chamber. Three of us hopped in a cab and went straight there, in early afternoon, unaware of the procedures. On the spot, they found 3 tickets and we got in that afternoon, with almost no wait.
Times are very different now. And third-party tour companies almost seem to have snagged all the tickets for a popular sight before they even go on sale. It was confounding last summer, trying to purchase Vatican Museums tickets for the fall on the day, hour, and at the second they were available for sale. We wound up with a private guide, who arranged for us to get tickets to the suddenly sold-out Vatican Museums, and we even got private access to an exhibit not available to the general public. It cost more than if we’d gone on our own, or with a group, but then we couldn’t have gotten in, so … we got what we paid for.
I know there’s no extra exhibit to the Last Supper - the dining hall room is the exhibit. But will you be using a private guide for your one day in Milan, to get the most of your time in the city? Maybe that’s a possibility, with the Last Supper part of the agenda? I wish you the very best of luck, whatever strategy you use.
We finally got to Milan last fall. We were fortunate to get tickets to see The Last Supper and very glad we did (booked well in advance- but things were easier last year). It is amazing. We did the English tour.
We had 2 nights in Milan. I could have skipped Milan were it not for those tickets.
You have 1 day- how many hours is that? Is this the last night of trip?
Chances that you’ll get walk up tickets for 4 are pretty slim. Do you want to dedicate that amount of time for a slim possibility?
There is enough else to do in a few hours in Milan. The Duomo roof terraces are very cool. Walk thru the Galleria, grab lunch at Panzerotti Luini, have an apertivo on the piazza.
It’s a big city.
We were disappointed we didn’t have time for the Monumental Cemetery, but that would be hard to fit in a 1 day stay.
If seeing the Last Supper is a must your best option is most likely a third party tour.
I get not wanting any more tours/expense.
However if I only had 1 day in Milan I wouldn’t want to spend it hunting down hard to get tickets.
Plan to fly in or out of Milan on your next trip to Italy. Get your LS tickets early. :)
Thank you so much for all your advice! You're right...time will be better spent being prepared then to go out on hope that I could snag four tickets at the same time on the day we are there!! I so appreciate everyone's willingness to share their experience with us! Thank you ☺️
When we went a few years ago I tried and tried unsuccessfully to get tickets direct. Gave up and went 3rd party as one part of a longer tour. It was ok, some pretty good interpretation of other sites I wouldn't have gotten otherwise.
Your time inside to actually see the Last Supper is limited to 15 minutes, so you have to decide how much effort it's worth. We were glad we did it as part of a third-party tour because we did get to see other Milan sights (like La Scala, and the Galleria) as part of the deal. We also only had one day in Milan, and the tour made it more worthwhile, plus being transported everywhere was an added value.
I was unable to get tickets even though I checked the day they were available. Since I was only in Milan for half a day, I paid for a tour to see the Last Supper. The tour got us to the top sites, and the commentary of the guide enhanced our visit. I felt like it allowed us to maximize our very brief time in Milan.
Thank you everyone for your help! This has made it obvious what I need to do to see the Last Supper. I appreciate you taking the time to respond!
