Last Sunday of the month?

We are arriving in Rome on 3/28/15 on our first trip to Italy. We hoped to tour the Vatican Museums that day and the ancient Rome sites on Sunday, March 29. Now I am concerned when I hear about the free museums in Rome on the last Sunday of the month. Do you think there will be hordes of people? Will it make it harder for us to visit the Colosseum, Forum, Pantheon on that Sunday? Thank you for your help!

I don't remember if the last Sunday is free or not. But when it is free, there will be mobs. The locals like a bargain as well as any American tourists so expect long lines.

We went to the Vatican Museum on the last Sunday in Feb 2013 and it was free. It opened at 9 AM. We got there at 9. The line was at least 4 blocks then around to St Peters Square. We finally got into the Museum about 11 AM. I probably would have gotten in line sooner if I had known how long the line was going to be. Of course I should have known since it was free. We did the Colosseum etc on another day. The line into St Peters was so long on Sunday that we decided to come back the next day for that tour. I hope this will help you plan your time.

Millers,

I would not waste my time waiting in a long line on that last Sunday of the month.

How many days will you be in Rome?

What other cities will you be traveling to?

If you are flying out of Rome, perhaps you want to travel to your next destination then explore Rome the last 3-4 days before flying back home.

In addition to the long lines outside, the hordes of people eventually move inside.
