Last Night In Rome Hotel Question

We will be in Tuscany and our flight back is out of Rome. So we are driving back the day before we leave and need to spend a night in Rome. I am leaning towards staying at the Hilton Airport as we have to return the car and they have a free shuttle into the city. The cost for one night with breakfast runs about $284. Any suggestions?

What time is your flight? If it is later then 10 am, you could stay in Rome for half the price.

Thank you for your reply. Our flight is 11:30 AM. The issue we have is that we must return the car on Saturday and our flight leaves Sunday so the free shuttle was one of the reasons we were leaning toward the Hilton Airport. Most hotels we found in Rome for a Saturday night stay for less than US$175 are not in very good neighborhoods or have very bad reviews. Thank you for any recommendations.

Return the car to the airport and take the Leonardo Express into the city. If you get a hotel near the termini you can save a lot of money and still be able to walk the city that final night. You can either take the train back to the airport in the morning or take a cab for 40 euros. Donna

Maybe you could also store your luggage at the airport and just take an overnight bag into the city.

I've stayed at Hotel Katty, about a 10-min walk from Termini. It is family-run, has an elevator and refurbished ensuite rooms. I stayed there last fall. It was fairly inexpensive, with discount for paying with cash. I would stay there again. There are other decent hotels in the Termini area.

Be sure to read the info from the excellent Ron in Rome on this topic. Not surprisingly, this is a VERY frequently asked question. Staying near FCO

If you feel you must stay near the Airport, this link may help you: The Best Hotels and B&B's near the FCO Airport. I prefer to stay in town and enjoy my last night... especially during the summer... Yet there are more options than just the Hilton or American-branded hotels out at the airport. If price is a concern for staying in-town, you might check out the Termini, Prati, or Trastevere areas. Here some links on the hotels that Venere and Booking .com guests rate as the best: Prati-Vatican Area, near Roma Termini, and in Trastevere. At the bottom of these posts is a link that will allow you to sort the hotels in that area by price. Do read the reviews if you go this route! You could "switch," if you're comfortable driving in parts of Rome, your rental car to a drop-off at the train station. Good Luck in your decision and selection.

I have stayed at the Hilton Airport and while not up to the standards of a typical Hilton is very easy walk or shuttle to the airport. For one night I would stay at the Hilton and use the shuttle for one last day/evening in Rome. Being so close to the airport you will sleep better. I usually have enought Hilton points for a free night at the Rome airport or CDG Hilton.

We have stayed several times at the Holiday Inn at Fiumincino and although I can't remember the price off the top of my head, it wasn't anywhere near as expensive as the Hilton. We have driven in from Tuscany directly to the hotel. We drop off our luggage and our rooms were always ready and then we return our rental car. We then go directly from the terminal into Rome. We have used both the train and taxis to get into Rome. While I would much prefer to stay in Rome, I get anxious about getting to the airport on time and I am more relaxed at night by staying at the airport!

I'm having this exact same problem so I'm glad I found this thread. I'm not 100% decided, but I think I'm going to return my car at the termini station and stay in Rome the night before, then take a taxi to the airport in the morning. I would hate to spend my last night in Italy in an airport hotel when I could spend my last night strolling the Piazza Novona and eating gelato. I really understand the people that say it's worth the piece of mind by staying at the aiport though. Ahhh...decisions.
