As Rome is my point of orientation, I'll be coming back to the eternal city for my final night in Italy before flying out the next a.m. Any suggestions on where to stay? Ideally, I'd like to be in close proximity to the airport or the train station, so as to catch my 9:50am flight.

We always stay in the Termini area and have used Hotel Sonya. Aberdeen, and Contilla. However, these are three star hotels and probably above 70E even at the current value. Contilla is the closest to the station at just over a block from the south door of Termini and Sonya about three blocks across from the Opera House.
Don't stay at the airport your last night. Stay in the city and enjoy your last night. Have your hotel arrange a car to take you to the airport to arrive 3 hours before departure.
I have stayed a couple times at Hotel Cervia Roma which is about 4-5 min walk from Termini. Nothing fancy and there can be a lot of stairs depending on your room assignment. I think its a great value for budget rooms in Rome.
