Last Night In Italy

It is our last night in Italy. A fantastic trip! Italy captivated us in 2008. 2010 was equally magical. Our itinerary: Sorrento, Amalfi Coast, Naples (briefly), Pompeii, Rome. Highlights: bus ride along Amalfi Coast (breathtaking), Terrace of Infinity in Ravello (eye popper), Pompeii (really??), staying in Trastevere (charming), Piazza Farnesina (Renaissance art in Rome-yayy!), biking the Appian Way (ancient monuments and blooming meadows), cappucino anywhere, FOOD!!, mastering Rome buses (bye-bye taxi man), daisies for our room from the Campo di Fiore and finding a vase in a nearby alimentari, being here with my husband.

Lowlights: circumvesuviana (bleech-take the ferries!), Naples (scary and the Pompeii mosaic exhibit is closed for restoration), Naples, again (got scammed 8 euros on the EuroStar train on the way to Rome - more on that later), lost my Rick Steves book in Santa Maria Maggiore (lost a friend, but found him in a book store near the Trevi-reunited!), desparately missing my dog.

Next Trip: the lakes in the north!

Ciao Ciao for now. And for anyone planning a trip . . . it will change your life!

The buses in Rome scare me. I have yet to figure out their route system. I have a fear of getting onto the wrong bus and riding it into oblivion. I did that once, and it scared the crap out of me trying to get back! Any hints or suggestions? I too would like to shed the crooked taxi man.

First I spend a lot of time at home and in Rome figuring out where I am staying in relation to everything else. But the thing that clinched it for me this time was Ricks 2010 Rome book (not Italy, just Rome). He has got the most excellent sidebar on how to read the bus stop signs. I took some time to study the signs, along with a really good map, I got the hang of it. Also at Termini, where everything comes together, local buses (like the one out to the Appian Way) and buses that just travel in the center of Rome are separated.

Great updates. I agree about the bus system, it's great once you get the hang of it.
