My husband and I will be returning to Florence the night before our early morning flight home (6:25 am). Please recommend a reasonable hotel that is close to a train to the airport. Thanks!

I’d stay anywhere in the historic center and have hotel call a taxi
It’s a fixed rate 22 euros I think and won’t take more than 15-20 min
I believe check in desks open at 4:30

The city center is not far (15-20 min by taxi or lightrail) but if you don't care to stay downtown on your last night, I usually stay here:

They are close to the airport.
They are also along the lightrail line T2 to the airport, therefore you can use it to conveniently go downtown on your last day. I don't care about staying downtown Florence anymore, I've been in Florence most of my life, so I just stay near the airport the night before an early flight (where I usually return the car rental the day before). I still take a taxi at that time of the morning, as I don't know when the first light rail goes. I can tell you however that the time savings is minimal, since the city center is only 20 min by taxi, while from there you might save 10-15 min at most.

The first T2 tram run is at 5:00am from Piazza dell'Unità, arriving at 5:20am at the airport. In the early morning there is a run every 10 minutes.
