December 8 we will stay in Catania, Sicily. It is the feast of the Immaculate Conception which I understand is celebrated in Catania. The next morning we need to be at the airport between 6:30 and 7:00 for a 9:00 flight to Rome on Ryanair. Where should we stay? In some ways I would like to stay at Magnolia Hotel (walkable to airport), but in other ways I would prefer to be in central Catania for possible parades or other festivities. I will have a car unless I turn it in the evening of the 8th. What would be your choice?
The Basilica Cattedrale di Sant'Agata in Catania is only 3 miles from the airport. I’m not sure the rental car facility is even open at the time you’d need to be at the airport, so I’d drop the rental off the day before your flight. A car wouldn’t be helpful the city. If you plan to be out late enjoying the festival, then stay in town. If you plan on turning in early, stay by the airport and take a taxi into town. It should be fairly inexpensive. It’s also possible the hotel may have a guest shuttle to take guests into the city.
We usually stay at the Catania International Airport Hotel (very near the airport) and take a bus (or cab) into the city for afternoon and/or evening activities. The hotel isn't perfect but it's convenient and good enough for a one-night stay. For us, it's much more convenient to be near the airport for an early morning flight.
