Last minute Tuscan itinerary help

I planned a last minute 9 day trip to Italy and I just wanted some input.

Tues 27 - Land in Rome 8am
Wed 28 - Day tripping to Pompeii and then pizza in Naples
Thur 29,30 - Taking the morning SENA bus to Siena. Renting a car on the 30th to explore Hill towns and wineries.
Sat 31, 01, 02, - Return rental. Take the train or bus to Florence. Day trip to Bologna maybe on the 2nd.
Tues 03, 04 - Take early train back to Rome. Fly home on the 4th.

This will be my third time to Rome so I've seen the city... I figured I'll explore Siena on the 29th so I'll only need my rental car on the 30th. I plan on heading to Civita first then working my way back up to Montepulciano, Montalcino, and maybe a winery or two along the way... Is Florence a good spot for Easter weekend? THANKS in advance!!

Your proposed Itineary looks doable, but I have a few thoughts.....

  • Wed. 28 - that's likely going to be a long and tiring day, especially as it's the day after arrival. You may still be experiencing some degree of jet lag.
  • Thur. 29,30 - while the SENA bus is one option, you could also take the train on that route. The station in Siena is at the bottom of the hill, so you'll have to take a Bus or Taxi up to town if you arrive by rail. As you're planning to rent a car, I assume you're aware of that you'll need the compulsory International Driver's Permit, which is used in conjunction with your home D.L. Those are available for a small fee at any AAA / CAA office and are valid for one year. You'll also have to be extremely vigilant to avoid the ZTL (limited traffic) areas which exist in many cities, as each pass through one will result in hefty fines!

If you're planning to do any tasting at wineries during the time you're using the rental car, keep in mind that the impaired driving limits are very strict in Italy.

Fri 30 - Rent a car. Day trip to Volterra & San Gimignano
Sat 31 - Drive to Pienza & Montepulciano (1N)
Sun 01 - Drive to Cortona & Arrezo (1N)
Mon 02 - Return rental. Take train to Orvieto (1N)
Tues 03 - Take train to Rome (1N)
Wed 04 - Fly home

It is very last minute!!!! I just got my international drivers license this morning and I'll defintley watch my alcohol intake. Thanks again.
