Last Minute Trip to Rome - Recomendations?

Hi, my husband and I have made a last minute decision to take the kids to Rome for Spring Break. We have flights and accomodations secured, but now are having a hard time securing reservations for the major attractions. We will be there for Easter weekend (arriving Holy Thursday, March 28th and departing Easter Sunday, March 31st). The only one of the 5 of us who has ever been to Rome is my husband and that was something like 25 years ago, so we would really not like to miss out on sites such as The Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's Basilica, and The Colosseum. Anyone have any suggestions for the best way to get tickets to enter these, without breaking the bank? Thought about booking the "Hidden Museum.." via the official Vatican Musuem's site and pay the extra 300 EUR or that, are we able to enter the museums and the Sistine Chapel freely with that ticket, or only with a tour guide?

Thank you!!

St. Peter’s is free
No ticket needed

Once you are done with tour- left in the Vatican Museums you’ll have access to all including Sistine chapel.

Good luck with others
You’ll need to check Easter schedules

Maybe try a tour company like Walks of Italy

Just note on the "Hidden Museum" tours? I don't know if you missed it but there are TWO separate € 300,00 fees for them: one for opening the restricted area, and another for the guide. That's in addition to entry tickets prices and pre-sales fee of 5.00 € per ticket. I copied this from the "Chapel of Nicholas V" tour.

Tariff for the opening of one area: € 300,00.
Full Price ticket: € 25,00
Reduced Ticket: € 13,00
Guide Service (optional): € 300,00
Earphones (optional): €1,50
Duration of the tour: 3 hours
The tour follows an itinerary which includes: the Pio Clementino Museum, the Gallery of the Candelabras, the Gallery of the Geographical Maps and the Gallery of the Tapestries (Renaissance art), the Raphael Rooms, the Sistine Chapel, the opening of the Chapel of Nicholas V (Area closed to the public).

So all told for your family of five, you'll be pushing the € 700,00 mark for either this one or the "Cabinet of Masks" tour. The tours do cover the other areas listed, including the Sistine, but both of them start around midday and I'd expect the museums to be positively mobbed at that point, the tour's "Hidden" section aside. Yes, this is a guided tour you can't do on your own, and an expensive one because of the special opening of either the cabinet of masks or Nicholas chapel. I don't know exactly where either of these special areas are so have no idea exactly where you'll be left when your tour is over but I assume it'll be inside the museums somewhere, and you'd be allowed to explore on your own. Be forewarned that doing so could be VERY difficult give the size of the Easter weekend crowds.

I'm not much help for Colosseum for last minute Easter weekend tickets. It's the #1 tourist attraction in all of Italy, if that's any indication of how fast tickets sell out during high season. The Colosseum is also closed on Friday the 29th which further reduces available tickets for the weekend. There are two Coopculture on-site ticket offices; you'd need to be there WELL before they open, ALL of you need to be together with passports in hand (tickets are nominative) and ready to enter right away if they assign you an immediate entry slot. This will be your least expensive ticket option.

As suggested, you might also try group tours led by outside companies for both the Vatican and Colosseum. Easter weekend is just not a great time to try and get last-minute tickets to the biggest tourist magnets. :O(

Be aware that St.Peter's may be closed from midday on Good Friday until Easter Mass on Sunday, which is a ticketed event. We were in line for entry one year (2014) with visiting guests and suddenly the barriers went up.

I would definitely look at Walks of Italy for a guided tour of the Museums and Sistine Chapel. If they can get you into the basilica, they will.

If "Walks of Italy" doesn't have availability, try "The Roman Guy" or "Through Eternity" tours. These two have also had positive feedback from posters who've used them.

Thanks everyone! This is all good info. The 700 EUR for the hidden museums is over budget for us, so let's see if we can try one of the tour companies. I will try Walks of Italy. Any others you would recommend, specifically for The Vatican Museums/Sistine Chapel? If we forego hiring a tour company, should we even try to be in line at the ticket window of the Vatican Museums at the crack of dawn?We are ready to be up early every day of our Rome portion of this trip and plan to spend some more leisure time "recovering" from Rome in other parts of Italy later that week :)

It's great you're here asking questions, because Rome is more enjoyable with some forward planning, let alone on the most busy weekend of the year! You're only in Rome 2 days?? Yikes. I see you're heading to Bologna from Rome, may I ask why only 2 days in Rome? Consider using the Time Shifter app to try to alleviate some jet lag symptoms. Normally you could go wait for a taxi at FCO, but arriving the day before GF, I would book through the hotel. It was 65 E last December. What time do you leave Easter Sunday for Bologna?

Schools are out across Europe from Maundy Thursday, so expect lots of families. I would absolutely book the Vatican Museum ahead of time if you can, don't rely on being there at dawn wasting time with others trying to get same day tickets. Here's an interesting link about avoiding the crush in the museums, if you're willing to go later in the day... https://www.romewise.com/visit-the-sistine-chapel.html

You mentioned getting out early, yes do get out as early as possible & at least take a walk to the Trevi Fountain & Piazza Navona, Rome is so much more than the bigger sites!

Opinions here are divided on the Coliseum, we are in the 'take a stroll at dusk and look at it from the outside' camp. There will be as many people saying you MUST see it. So if you don't get tickets, consider walking first to view the Forum, then down to the Coliseum - Walk up to the Capitoline museum for great views out over the forum, (Just continue straight past the museums and go right down the hill to the viewpoint.) We also walked up to the “Coffee Capitol” opened every day from 9:30 am to 6:30 pm for even better views over Forum. You can get there without entering the museum. Walk up the stairs to the Campidoglio, take an immediate right at the top, walk under the arch and to your left you will see the entrance. BUT it’s a LOT of steps by the time you get to the cafe. Then turn right coming back from viewing forum in the Capitoline square, leads down hill & stroll down the Foro Romano walking street to the Coliseum.

Take a look at meal planning - Personally, I don't like wandering around looking for places to eat once everyone is already hungry. Good Friday & Easter Sunday will see a lot of places closed, but not everywhere. Once you have the basics of your itinerary, look at the areas for good and or cheap eats. The Jewish Ghetto restaurants will be open until sundown on GF, (start of Shabbat) and open all day on Easter, but I would book ahead. One way to eat cheaper and have less of a crush is to eat out at lunch time & just grab pizzas by the slice for dinner. Or go to bakeries for both meals!

Good luck!

Sandancisco, originally the trip was meant as a very special birthday gift for my Italian-supercar fan son. Our plan was to tour the auto factories in the Motor Valley area and last minute decided to add Rome and take the whole family! As I’ve told the kids, this is only a Rome “preview” lol. We don’t tend to stress much when we travel and in fact usually enjoy just learning about the cities we visit and eat and walk our way into learning about the culture. This will not be our last time in Rome, one way or another, so we will do/experience/enjoy what we can. We also feel very lucky to be able to be in Rome for Holy Week, as Catholics.

We actually arrive in Rome on Thursday very early morning and plan to take it “easy” most of Thursday - Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona, Spanish Steps, and food and drink. :) Friday would be our Vatican Day, and maybe try and get a peek at the Way of the Cross at the Colosseum with the Pope on Friday night. Saturday maybe the Forum and Colosseum, maybe the Vatican, depending on what we’ve been able to do the previous two days, River Tiber, and food and drink! Finally, we’re hoping to brave St. Peter’s Square for Easter Mass on Sunday morning and then head to Bologna by train on Sunday afternoon. Whew! Am I nuts? ;)

I do think it’s pretty crazy to attempt that itinerary. There are hundreds of beautiful churches and museums in Rome that will not be as insanely crowded as the Vatican during Easter. Maybe you could look into some other churches that may interest you that would also be having Holy Week services. Maybe try Saint John Lateran and climb the Scala Sancta. That would certainly be very moving on Good Friday! If it’s not going to be your last trip to Rome, then you don’t need to do everything. You could also skip the Vatican Museum and still be a part of the outdoor Easter processions like the Way of the Cross on Good Friday.

That's fabulous (and a little amazing)!
Ditto on the list of churches. To be honest, I like some of them more than mighty St Pete's. There are a few more I could add to that list but there's more than enough there already for 2 days. :O)
