I am leaving tomorrow for Italy. Hooray! I am trying to piece together our train time travels & I can't figure out how we will navigate from Orvieto to Sorrento via train. The DB Bahn site is not showing any trains to Sorrento. Can anyone provide some assistance?
Lindsay,
For travel from Orvieto to Sorrento, you'll need to take a "regular" train to Napoli Centrale (possibly change trains at Roma Termini, I haven't checked). You'll then transfer to the Circumvesuviana commuter train. It's a bit of an "old clunker" but it will get you there. Watch your valuables though!
When you arrive in Napoli, there's a separate station for the Circumvesuviana (as I recall, it's one floor down from the main station). Watch your valuables there also!
Happy travels!
The Circumvesuviana is a local commuter train. That's why it doesn't show up on DBahne. It does leave from downstairs of the main Naples train station. Just buy the tickets when you get to Naples.
Thank you so much! This will be the most complicated trip of my vacation, but at least now I know what to do.
I have taken the Circumvesuviana several times. Never had a problem. BTW sit on the right side of the train (based on the direction of travel) for some good views of the ocean on the way down.
Thanks for the tip! I always seem to pick the wrong side.
Just thinking about Sorrento makes me smile! I'm sure you'll have a great time there (and elsewhere in Italy). BTW in Sorrento have a drink on the terrace at the Foreigner's Club, which has a fantastic view overlooking the ocean.
