Last minute search for budget accommodations.

My daughter is competing in the Xterra World Championships September 28th at Lake and was going to spend a few days ahead of that, sightseeing. A friend booked accommodations but can no longer travel due to a sick teenager. My daughter now will be on her own, and will not have anyone to share the cost with. She flies into Venice. She will spend 1 night, and most of 2 days wandering around there. She has decided to spend 3 nights in Verona, I am trying to find something near old town. She will arrive by train but will rent a car to head North to her race in Lake Molveno. She wants 1 location and will do day trips by train or car. Any ideas?

A good place to search for last minute accommodations is Booking. com
Use the filters to set for budget, location, etc.

How old is your daughter? Could she not search for her own accommodations?
Will she be old enough to rent a car in Italy? Not sure but there maybe a minimum age requirement.
Make sure she has an IDP- get it at your AAA and reads up on driving in Italy- ZTLs, parking, speed cars, etc.

We always use autoeaeurope.com for our European rentals.

In addition to booking.com, I have found this b&b in Italy site helpful for finding modest budget accomdations in several cities. It looks like they have some for Verona. https://www.bed-and-breakfast.it/en/verona?checkin=09/28/2024&checkout=10/01/2024&NumberRooms=1&NumberPeople=1&Children=&q=Verona%2C%20Veneto&tiporicerca=citta&idelemento=5327. If your daughter is open to hostels, that might be an option because most student travelers will be back in school by her travel dates.

My daughter is 43, but currently away on business when this all happened. I am retired and have travelled extensively on my own in Europe, so I have offered to do some research for her. I have been to Verona and all of the surrounding areas but most accommodations are not available. Booking.com shows very little at a price that is reasonable. She is trying to stay within the US $150 range but that might not be possible. Everything has suddenly changed and she would not have bothered to create a 10 day holiday if she knew she was travelling alone. She is currently driving a stick shift car in hilly Salt Lake City so will have no trouble with that. Thanks for your suggestion.

CD in DC, thanks for the B&B link. I will definitely look at those and pass it on to my daughter. She wasn’t considering hostels since she is travelling with a lot of valuable stuff like wetsuit, 2 pairs of bike shoes etc. She has rented a bike and helmet for the race but carrying a lot of gear, nutrition etc.

I also do the same as David. I use GoogleMaps and Booking and Hotels.com. I also use the hotel website as sometimes Booking or Hotels may not have available rooms, but their website does, If I am particularly interested in a place (maybe because I’ve been in the past), I also call. Sometimes some places (usually family run accommodations) have availability even though they don’t advertise it online.
A hotel in the city center of Verona for 200€ a night in high season like this month is already an achievement. US$150, which is basically 130€, can get you something out of the center, but only maybe. Italy is not Kansas anymore.

Thanks- it helps to have all the pertinent info.

We found Verona to be more expensive overall than other northern Italian cities. Is she set on Verona? Would Vicenza interest her? Possibly less expensive but can't say for sure.

She is currently driving a stick shift car in hilly Salt Lake City so
will have no trouble with that. Thanks for your suggestion.

She will still need an International Driving Permit- required by law and to be aware of things specific to driving in Italy- ZTLs, parking, speed cameras. Would hate to hear that she came home to a mailbox full of violations she didn't even know she made. It happens.

Thanks everyone. She has booked a B&B in Verona with a full kitchen. With your suggestions she has decided to visit Lake Garda, rent a bike and get a much needed cycling workout before heading to her race. She had already booked 3 nights post race so now she is good to go!
