We're leaving Sunday on our honeymoon and I was just wondering if anyone had some last minute recommendations on good restaurants before we leave. We'll be in Venice for 3 nights, Florence for 2, Siena for 2 and Rome for 5. We'll also be in Milan for an afternoon so if you know of a good lunch spot around the cathedral that would be good. We especially want to avoid the tourist traps. We will probably occasionally venture to an upscale establishment since it is our honeymoon, but we're also on a budget so low to mid-range gems are ideal. Thanks everyone!
Look on Graffiti Wall of this website and pick "mouthwatering Italy" and should get some good advice from people who have had great eats.
We enjoyed many great meals on our last trip to Italy (2010), but one of my favorites was the picnic we had with foccacia sandwiches from the Princi bakery which is very near the Duomo in Milan. Four euros for an amazing very fresh sandwich they cut with scissors and hand to you a wrapped and ready to go. If you want salad or wine to go with, cross the street to the little deli.
In Siena, we liked La Tellina on via Delle Terme. Very centrally located. Small, and I think we were the only English speakers in the place. Less than 40 euros for dinner including wine. Venice is tough, but we likes Ristoteca Oniga in Campo San Barnaba and Pizzeria Nono Risorto had good pizza for Venice. :-) In Rome our hands down favorite was Cul de Sac. Also enjoyed Roma Sparita very much for cacio e pepe.
Florence: Mario Trattoria near the Mercato Centrale is wonderful. Shared tables with locals and smart tourists for lunch. The food is wonderful and atmosphere lively. Ciao!
Also agree with La Tellina in Siena-small but very good restaurant. In Venice we liked Locanda Montini in San Trovaso area-google it to find website for directions-tricky to find. In Rome we love Armando near the Pantheon and in Milan, Bruno near the Duomo is excellent esp the antipasti. Have a fabulous trip!
In Venice, Tratoria da a Marisa. You will need dinner reservations and it is closed Sunday and Monday. Absolutely the best meal I had in all of Italy. The place is small (24 seats), mostly locales, very little English spoken, and for me, a
perfect Venetian gem. Have a wonderful visit to Italy. Beautiful country. Bella Italia. Bella.
Congrats Chris, As stated previously, Trattoria Da'a (Dalla) Marisa is one of the best kept secrets in Venice. Doesn't look like much outside, little brick corner building, small sign, but the food, wow! We were there the first week of September this year and caught lunch there. 7 days a week on lunch. Get there 15 or 20 minutes before noon or you wont get a seat. Only 24 seats inside. They stop taking lunch orders at 1:55 sharp, like an atomic clock. Went back for dinner later, to find out they are closed on wednesdays now too, so we just pub crawled, drank wine, and snacked all night.
And the Siena choices given are solid places also. Trattoria la Tellina is one of only 2 places in Italy that my wife and I have eaten at three or more times. The little chalk board menu out front changes almost every day. Try the Crema Di Funghi soup. I know, cream of mushroom, doesn't sound like much, does it? To die for. Have a great romantic time.
