Last minute lodging

Okay, here I am again...my husband has left it up to me to plan the route(s) for five of us to hike in the Dolomites. With only five days to hike, it is difficult for me to figure out what we can realistically cover in that short amount of time. I have two guide books, the Gillian Price guides including multi day and day hikes but honestly, I am getting really confused because they all look amazing. I am concerned about accomodations and trying to figure out if it's necessary to make hotel reservations in advance. My husband says let's just wing it and figure it out when we get there...which I'm not exactly opposed to but I also don't want to spend my time trying to find a place to sleep every night. We will be there October 5-11.

Any suggestions?

With 5 people espec. I would never chance "winging it" in the dolomites.
While it is almost off season alot of places maybe be closed, which is common in this area. Stay in larger towns like Castelrotto, do half day hikes. you may encounter some rain so half days are a better bet. I would reserve your lodging ahead you prob need 2 rooms, no question in my mind.

I think many of the huts will be closed when we go so we probably stay in town and do day hikes. We are healthy, strong hikers and my husband wants to get "up high", as he says, but I think many of the lifts will be closed as well. Can you recommend a hotel in Castelrotto (sp?).

Thanks for your advice.

Jan-my husband and I are planning 4 days in/around Bolzano Oct. 10-14. Do you have any suggestions for us? What hiking books are you using and have you decided where to stay?
